Australian
Scott Sunderland made a name for himself as a professional cyclist early on in his career. As a trusted domestique riding for stars like Stephen Rooks, Dimitri Konychev, Robert Millar, Jesper Skibby, Andrei Tchmil and Chris Boardman the young
former Australian National Road Champion earned respect and many life-long friendships. As a more seasoned pro he went on to share his experience with the younger generation of professional cyclists and in doing so helped Magnus Backstedt ride to victory in the biggest and toughest of Classics, Paris-Roubaix.
Scott’s attitude and inspiring personality saw him dubbed
“the Pro’s Pro” by leading Cycling News Journalist and Editor Jeff Jones.
Scott’s affinity with the one-day classics is running like a red wire through his life in cycling. As he moved on to become a
Sports Director with Bjarne Riis’ mighty CSC squad in 2005, he guided his team to consecutive victories in Paris-Roubaix.
After joint-directing the CSC-Saxo Bank team and Carlos Sastre to conquer the top of the podium in the Tour de France in 2008, Scott decided it was time for a new challenge and he accepted the
Sports Management position in the recently announced Professional British Cycling Team Sky.
As
a kid from the bush, Scott was a tough youngster determined to work as hard as needed to reach his goals. His strong-minded and gritty nature made it possible for him to already reach the top of Australian Cycling at the young age of 19, by winning the National Championships.
Scott placed highly in many of the world's greatest cycling events, but he also experienced quite a few setbacks due to injury throughout his career. The biggest challenge he fought back from was when he was hit by a team car in the 1998 edition of the Amstel Gold World Cup Race. Although the ramifications of that horrific accident are still being felt to date, Scott battled on in the sport he lives and breathes, and with outstanding results!
