So friends, here it is! My first blog on my brand new site. I warmheartedly welcome you to the Scott Sunderland pages. To be honest, not that long ago, it seemed surreal that I would ever have my very own pages on the www. How time creates change!
I started cycling at the age of 7, on account of an inspiring father. As a young boy, I dreamt of a successful professional career; with a whopping ambition, I imagined becoming world champion or win a historic classic! It is said that imagination offers a preview to life’s coming attractions. And indeed, some of my dreams became reality. Other objectives changed or faded as the years passed by; sometimes aspirations alter as one matures and imagination makes room for knowledge.
Cycling has granted me some superb moments and although I got dealt the occasional hard blow too, I have become the man I am through every experience which has shaped my personality and way of thinking. I am grateful for every day, every encounter. A friend of mine once predicted that years after my active racing days would end, I would discover I love the work off the bike as much or even more than the hard life on two wheels. Today, I gladly admit she was right.
God blessed me with a talent which offered the world to me. I have travelled to so many amazing places while racing and those adventures still continue today. When Bjarne Riis asked me to become a Sports Director in 2004 I had no idea I would learn so much and uncover various skills I never even realised I had. My time with Team CSC was brilliant, not only because of the job itself but mainly because of the people, the riders and staff I could work with. Spending those rewarding years with them encouraged me to reach further, aim higher and that's what we all should do, every day.
While on the road, I have met some amazing individuals; fans, journalists, photographers, business managers, my web-designer ;-).... I want to thank them for their interest, their help and their friendship and I dedicate this site to every single one of them.
Since 1998, by means of my diary on cyclingnews.com, I tried to offer an insight into the daily happenings of a hard working athlete. Today, I hope you will enjoy visiting this site too and that I can take you along as I set sail for a new endeavour. I for one am looking forward to sharing the following years with you!
