BIRTH OF A MEGATEAM

Team Sky director Scott Sunderland reveals how the Brits have assembled a killer squad.

By John Wilcockson,  the current editor of  VeloNews and has been writing about cycling since the 1960's. He is the author of LANCE: The Making of the World's Greatest Champion.

Sunderland, who speaks with a Flemish-inlfuenced Aussie accent, talked exclusively to VeloNews from his home in Zwalm, a small Belgian town on the Tour of Flanders route, not far from the Molenberg. The smooth-talking Sunderland, who wears three-piece suits to pre-race team managers meetings, fits perfectly into the corporate world surrounding Team Sky.
He first talked about the unique opportunities offered by a team that will operate closely with a national cycling federation and a sponsor that is not only interested in the Tour de France but also in making cycling a major sport (and means of transportation) in the UK.
